1985 fut un point de rupture dans l'histoire de la "route 66", car elle fut déclassée et remplacée par une route inter-états plus large.
Ceci assécha le trafic qui donnait la vie à de petites villes le long de la route 66, et beaucoup de petites entreprises firent faillite.
Par conséquent, quelques villes furent abandonnées et devinrent des villes-fantômes, mais quelques personnes, comme Angel Delgadillo, ne se découragèrent pas et créèrent une association pour lutter contre cet état de fait.
